In 2008 fourteen young Chinese women opened and closed the Olympic Games in Beijing with traditional percussion instruments and an enormous drum roll. On stage these women represent beauty, self-confidence and power – an image that seemed beyond reach for the longest time in their native country. After garnering success in China, the musicians began frequently performing internationally and eventually played their first European tour in 2011.

By now MANAO – Drums of China has performed on stage for over twenty years and displayed their traditional Chinese sound and modern, artistic show to audiences all over the world. With impressively exact synchronicity the musicians pound the heavy drums in lively rhythms – powerful and loud but also gentle and restrained. MANAO lets you sink into a mystic, inspiring world by wrapping the old art of Chinese drumming into a stage show that sheds a light on these captivating musical themes.

The talented women represent a Chinese generation that is oriented toward occidental values while upholding its extraordinary consciousness of tradition – thus building a bridge between an old culture and modernity. Their rise to success, becoming one of the most requested and popular drumming and percussion acts in the world is made all the more impressive and inspiring by the fact that in their native China, this traditional art had previously been reserved for men. In 2016 the performers of MANAO were even featured in the Hollywood Blockbuster “The Great Wall”, starring Matt Damon.
